A wonderful and unique find, a rare Roman mosaic was found in a British farm

A wonderful and unique find, a rare Roman mosaic was found in a British farm for the first time. Historic England, a public body concerned with the historical environment, said it was the first time the mosaics, found in Rutland, East Midlands, had been discovered 1,600 years ago. In a press release, Historic England explained that this Roman mosaic is the first of its kind, having been found in the United Kingdom. The Greek hero's battle depicts horses with Hector during the Trojan War, and is part of the many examples found in Europe Jim Irvine, the son of the landowner, discovered "unusual pottery" in a wheat field during the coronavirus lockdown in England last year and alerted local authorities.

Archaeologists from the University of Leicester Archaeological Services, along with Historic England and Rutland County Council, excavated the site, where the 11-by-7-meter mosaic was unearthed. Historic England said the complex was likely owned by a wealthy person with knowledge of classical literature. Duncan Wilson, chief executive of Historic England, said in a press release: "The discovery of such a rare mosaic of this size, together with the surrounding villa, is remarkable."

"Discoveries like this are very important in helping us piece together our shared history. By protecting this site, we can continue to learn from it, and look forward to what future excavations may teach us about the people who lived there." There are other buildings surrounding the Roman villa, which were discovered during a geophysical survey. Human remains dating from the late Roman or early medieval period were found at the site, and were later buried in mosaics.
